So much continues to happen, dear friends of LungA School <3

The school is coming this Fall…

The stage is effectively empty; being readied as a stage for the purpose of this performance. But space is never really empty, it carries with it the trances of what came before and the imagination of what may be coming...

LungA School is moving! Out of the Herðubreið, we said farewell to the walls and floor and memories attached somehow, and are reappearing near the mouth of the river when the port meets the town. We are working on Meyjarskemman, the oldest standing building in town, as one of the new teaching spaces for the school. In the late 1920s until the 1950s Meyjarskemman was a cinema and playhouse and we plan to make it into a place for making and sharing culture once again. The roof needs fixing to keep the building standing for at least another 150 years, and LungA friends Søren and Isa are busy making this happen. And just across the road is Öldutún, which is now the school office where I am writing this, and the radio is here and maybe we can have meetings and coffee and talk together. The magic is that new school sits between old friends Prentverk Seyðisfjörður and the in-town offices and facilities of Skálanes, and so we are excited to become part of an expanding cultural and educational neighbourhood. Wow.

But other changes are afoot. Our dear Heiðdís Hólm has said farewell to the school for now to spend more time with her fancy man in Akureyri, and we are so very sad to see her go. She has been a powerhouse for the school; a ship keeper. We know we shall see her here now and then as she has joined the HEIMA Collective and there are also rumours of a new exhibition of her work in town in October... but in the meantime, here is a memory of us together in our last performance as LungA School, by LungA School, back in June this year at the Skapandi Austurland Conference in Neskaupstaður.

To step into the magical shoes left by Heiðdís, Hugrún Einarsdóttir is here, joining the office to help operations, she is very welcome and we are very excited for her to meet the new participants and to be an indispensible part of becoming a school. Hugrún has arrived at the school at an exciting time, looking to provide administrative support and management to the incoming Fall Program, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the school, and, as a local resident of our belovèd Seydisfjordur, supporting the school as a community within a community. The staff and board of the LungA School would like to take this opportunity to publically welcome Hugrún to the school!

And speaking of which, the Fall Program starts at the end of the month, with Lasse and Þórir inviting a host of amazing practices coming to town brought here by participants, workshop leaders and artists-in-residence, and we are so excited to see them appear and work together. There is one final spot available on the programme due to a last minute cancellation, so if you know of anyone who might want the adventure, do let us know.
